A New Dawn for Africa: Stories of Hope from LivingStone International University
Education doesn’t just change a person’s path — it can rewrite an entire family’s story and reshape a nation’s future. At LivingStone International University (LIU), every cap and gown represents more than a degree. It’s a symbol of survival, redemption, and purpose. This month, we turn our spotlight to one student’s incredible journey and the ripple effect of LIU’s transformative mission.
The Journey of Butrus Akoon Aturjong

From War-Torn Youth to Ministry Leader
When Butrus Akoon Aturjong arrived at LIU in 2022, he carried more than his belongings. He brought with him the weight of war, loss, and unimaginable pain. As one of three South Sudanese students to attend that year, his story stands as a testament to resilience.
A survivor of the brutal civil war between Sudan and South Sudan, Butrus endured heartbreak that few can imagine. He lost his father and many loved ones. One memory stands out in chilling clarity — watching his aunt and two cousins die of thirst as they tried to escape back to South Sudan. Butrus himself barely survived. An old man found him, offering a single cap of water that saved his life.
Finding Hope at LIU
Butrus didn’t let tragedy define him. At LIU, he found something many lose in war — hope. Through mentorship, faith, and academic guidance, his life was reoriented toward a calling far greater than himself. His relationship with Jesus deepened, becoming the foundation for his future mission.
Today, with a bachelor’s degree in ministry in hand, Butrus is heading back to South Sudan with a vision. He plans to start a school and use his education to develop future leaders rooted in peace and love. His prayer? That the message of Christ will inspire people to lay down arms and lift one another.
Graduation Day: A Celebration Beyond Time

Why Eight Hours Mattered
On October 3, 2025, the LIU campus erupted in celebration. For eight unforgettable hours, 78 students crossed the graduation stage. Yes, eight hours. And no, it wasn’t too long.
Those hours were filled with dancing, worship, family, tears, and heartfelt speeches. They marked the end of long roads paved with sacrifice and faith. In Uganda, a college degree can multiply a person’s earning power by four or five times. So, every graduate represented the possibility of generational change.
Commissioned for Purpose
But this wasn’t just about academic achievement. Each graduate was commissioned to be a disciple-maker. Whether they’re going into business, ministry, or education, these students are prepared to bring the gospel and servant leadership into every corner of African society. The stage wasn’t just a place to receive a diploma — it was a launchpad for purpose.

Seeing LIU Through Fresh Eyes
A Visitor’s Reflection

Dustin Gist, part of the LIU development team, finally made his long-awaited trip to the university. Though he had served the school from afar for years, being on campus brought it all to life.
He described meeting staff and students as emotional and unforgettable. From heartfelt prayers to spontaneous laughter, the people of LIU left a lasting impression. Dustin came away convinced of one thing — LIU isn’t just a university. It’s a movement.
Building Relationships That Last
He shared how finally embracing friends like Henry, John, and Nicholas after years of emails and Zoom calls was deeply moving. He saw the fruit of what LIU has been sowing — Christ-centered leaders committed to lasting change. According to Dustin, “LIU is making a real difference,” and he’s eager to share that story with anyone willing to listen.
A Ripple That Starts with You
Education can be a ripple effect, and LivingStone International University is right at the heart of it. One student like Butrus goes on to educate hundreds. One graduate like the 78 celebrated this October becomes a voice of peace, a builder of schools, a leader in business, or a pastor in a village.
So, if you’re wondering whether your support matters, the answer is yes. Your prayers, your partnership, your encouragement — it’s all part of the greater story.
Because when you invest in LIU, you don’t just change one life. You change the future of Africa.
